J Block - Earthquake Prone Buildings
As part of the Ministry of Education’s National Earthquake Resilience Programme, a Detailed Seismic Assessment has been completed on J Block.
As a result of this assessment, J Block has been identified as an earthquake prone building by Tauranga City Council and they have issued a notice to the school to ensure we have J Block strengthened by 2032.
Even though no immediate action is required by the College, the Board of Trustees have considered this situation very carefully as the health and safety of all staff, students, contractors and visitors on site in this building is paramount.
The advice received is that J Block is not considered to represent an immediate risk to occupants and that the building can still be occupied.
We have been working closely with the Ministry to confirm a permanent strengthening programme and this will commence towards the end of this year and will take place concurrently with the completion of rectifying the weather tightness of this building.
